How do you clean out the algae in an automatice pet water dispenser?

I have a 2.75 gallon water dispenser for my pets. I have had it for over a year. There is now green algae growing inside the bottle, mostly near the neck area. Is there a way to clean this or treat it? I hate to have to buy a new one every year.
